Counselling and Psychotherapy are both ‘talking’ therapies in which you can
talk about and explore feelings, issues and concerns.
Whilst both offer support, confidentiality and a non-judgemental approach,
neither provides advice or diagnosis.
Instead, they allow you to gain valuable insights into your situation and the
feelings and behaviours you are experiencing, and empower you to use those
insights to make clear, informed and effective choices about your life.
What’s the difference between them?
Broadly speaking, Counselling allows individuals to deal with specific life issues, whilst
Psychotherapy is used to deal with 'deeper' issues, most commonly in
situations where past experiences are having a negative affect on feelings
and behaviours in the present.
What form of Counselling/Psychotherapy is available?
Most psychological therapies fall exclusively into one of the following
categories:
1. Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
2. Psychoanalytical/Psychodynamic
3. Humanistic
4. Neuro-linguistic Programming (NLP)
5. Gestalt
6. Existential
7. Person Centred
However, at Pinnacle Plus, we believe that a single style of therapy is rarely
the most effective method. Instead, we blend a variety of approaches together
within a single framework.
It allows us to offer you a choice of short-term or long-term solutions that we
can design specifically to match your needs and requirements more closely
than any single therapy.
How long does Counselling/Psychotherapy treatment last?
For some people, a short course of therapy provides an effective way to deal
with a specific issue. For others, longer-term therapy gives them the
opportunity to examine and understand broader themes within their lives.
The number of sessions that you decide to book will vary according to the
nature of your situation, your presenting issue and the depth to which you
would like to explore it. The approach can then be reviewed at regular
intervals to ensure that you are receiving the therapy that is right for you, and
allow for any necessary adjustment to be made.
What is the difference between Counselling/Psychotherapy and
coaching?
Coaching is more specific in scope than Counselling or Psychotherapy.
Coaching tends to focus on performance and effectiveness in a specific area
of life - particularly work – while Counselling and Psychotherapy focus on
broader life issues.
Although some of the skills are similar, a counsellor or psychotherapist tends to work at a far
deeper level than a coach, particularly where psychological and emotional
issues exist. Therapists are very careful about boundary issues and, unlike
many coaches, do not have contact with clients outside of the immediate
working relationship.
